Divesting From Meta

At Peak Resilience, our commitment has always been to meet our clients where they are. Whether through our accessible pricing options or our diverse team of counselors and practicum students, we strive to ensure that everyone feels welcome and supported in our space. Equally important is our dedication to fostering an environment where our clients can feel safe—both in the physical and digital spaces we engage with.

In light of Meta’s recent policy updates, we have made the decision to divest from their platforms. The updated guidelines, particularly concerning the definitions of hate speech, have raised significant concerns for us. Specifically, Meta now allows users to refer to queer, trans, and non-binary individuals as “mentally ill,” exposing some of the most marginalized members of society to harmful and discriminatory rhetoric.

The changes to Meta’s hate speech policies are alarming. They have removed protections against harmful language targeting a person’s race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity, and serious health conditions. Furthermore, policies that previously prohibited hate speech against individuals or groups based on their protected characteristics—such as the use of dehumanizing terms like “it” to describe transgender and non-binary people—have been lifted.

For us, these changes are incompatible with the values we uphold at Peak Resilience. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and that online platforms should reflect these principles. As a result, we are transitioning away from Meta-owned platforms and are committed to seeking alternative spaces that better align with our mission to create inclusive, safe, and supportive environments for our clients.

We remain committed to meeting our incredibly diverse clientele where they are, while ensuring that the spaces we occupy together are free from harm, bigotry, and ignorance.
