Queer Registered Social Worker (RSW)

Hi, I’m Kayla (she/her). I’m a queer, anti-oppressive social worker with 15 years of experience supporting individuals impacted by gender-based violence, incarceration, substance use, mental health challenges, and trauma.

Experienced in Gender-Affirming Care and Counselling

Most recently, my work has focused on providing support within healthcare settings, particularly in the area of gender-affirming care. I have experience working with queer, trans, and gender-diverse folx, as well as supporting parents, family members, and partners in affirming their 2SLGBTQ+ loved ones. I’m also deeply committed to supporting individuals navigating suicidality and self-harm, and bring a calm, non-judgmental presence to these conversations.

Working from a Social Justice Lens

As a queer, able-bodied, white settler who has worked within systems of oppression, I bring a critical social justice lens to my practice. My approach is grounded in harm reduction, trauma-informed care, queer theory, anti-carceral frameworks, intersectional feminism, and decolonial perspectives. I acknowledge the privileges I hold and consider each client as the expert in their own life, while also bringing my lived experience of trauma, queerness, and gender-based violence to my work.

Compassionate, Non-Judgemental Counselling with Humour and Safety

I understand that seeking support can be vulnerable and overwhelming. I bring compassion, non-judgment, and humor to create a space where clients can feel safe, seen, and supported in navigating life’s challenges.

Counselling that Supports Your Healing and Growth

Over the years, I’ve been deeply shaped by the resilience and insight of clients from diverse backgrounds, including those facing poverty, racism, transphobia, sexism, and other forms of marginalization. I aim to work collaboratively with clients, supporting them in their healing and growth. Whether you’re struggling with grief, depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, or exploring your gender or sexuality, I would love to connect and see how we can work together to reduce suffering and foster deeper understanding.

The foundations of my practice include: intersectional feminism, queer theory, trauma-informed care, attachment theory, harm reduction, and anti-oppressive practice

It depends on what you want. Most clients fall into one of three categories:

  1. One (or two) and done – I just want some advice to move forward on a problem. Cool, just let me know that so I can make sure the session will be focused.
  2. Acute issue – I need some support to resolve an issue, but I don’t want to be in counselling forever. This usually takes 8-12 sessions but could be shorter or longer based on your needs (time, financial, issue complexity). We create the ideal structure together.
  3. Long-term therapeutic relationship – I need a safe space to process life events. Sessions are often booked up to a year in advance so you can count on the structure and support. The topic often changes session to session, but relates back to an overarching theme of self-development, relationship management, or something of that nature.

I can’t tell you which issues fall into which bucket, or guarantee results, because each client is unique. It’s best to let me know which category you think you might fall into, we can check and adjust as needed.
