Paola Zorrilla Steenbock

Paola Zorrilla Steenbock is currently accepting new clients.

Paola (she/they) holds a Master in Counselling Psychology from Adler University and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Paola offers therapy services in English, Spanish, and German.

Paola believes that whether you go into counselling for yourself or to change the way you show up with others, change happens when there is trust and safety. She prioritizes ongoing consent and trauma-informed practices to encourage insight and tools that realistically support your growth.

We all live in a world that tends to individualize our problems, often leading us to feel lost or alone. Paola works to contextualize your challenges and recognize the role that culture and society play in shaping your experiences and worldview. She recognizes that change is often a complex and non-linear process and that all humans struggle to navigate. Sometimes part of the change process can bring up experiences and emotions that can feel too heavy to bear. Paola uses compassion, empathy, cultural respect and humility when supporting you with the emotional heavy lifting.

As a queer, neurodivergent, immigrant, Paola personally understands the challenges of reconciling opposing cultural values and the importance of accommodating individual and contextual limitations and strengths. Given her clinical experience working with neurodivergent adults and children, she understands the importance of supporting each client with creativity and flexibility. No client can be reduced to one identity or experience, and Paola recognizes that navigating change in the context of your relationships and responsibilities is unique to you. She also offers to incorporate creative interventions such as art and experiential and visual metaphors if you would find it helpful.

Outside of Peak, you can find Paola spending time with her family and friends, walking around the seawall, or creating art with paint, yarn, or punch-needling.

What experience or background do you bring to your counselling and supervision practice that is uniquely yours?

Growing up with a Latin American father and a European mother in Latin America, and then moving to Canada in my teenage years, I often felt caught between worlds and struggled to understand my cultural identity. Over time, however, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of my heritage and learned to appreciate the value of seeing the world from different cultural perspectives. My experiences have given me a unique ability to empathize with those who feel out of place or disconnected from their community and themselves. I bring this empathy and flexibility to my counselling practice, helping my clients explore different points of view and find their way towards how they want to see themselves and show up with others.

What is your favourite thing about working closely with people every day?

I love working with people because I love learning about other people’s perspectives, emotions, and experiences. As a very empathetic person, I feel privileged to be able to step into my client’s world and accompany them on their growth journey. Changing can often be a very lonely experience, and I strive to be able to have the privilege to make it a more approachable process. I often find that the work in the therapy room is a continuous lesson on compassion, genuineness, and humanity.

What have you learned from your work?

I am constantly amazed by how much I learn from each client about resilience and the human experience. While there are certain similar human experiences, we each draw different lessons and insights based on our unique perspectives and circumstances. This is what makes my work so rewarding – the opportunity to help clients navigate their challenges while also gaining a deeper understanding of the infinite nuances of the human experience.
