It’s nice to meet you!

Hello and welcome! My name is Renee (she/her), and I am a practicum counsellor currently pursuing my Master of Counselling at City University. I like to approach counselling collaboratively, here to support you in your journey, while respecting your autonomy in making your own decisions. I take an integrative approach to therapy, tailoring my methods to each person’s unique needs. After all, therapy is such a personal journey, it only makes sense for the process to be too!

In sessions, I hope you can find yourself in a space that is warm, non-judgmental, and grounded in curiosity. I don’t believe people are “broken” or need to be fixed. Instead, I see therapy as a space where we can slow down together, make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface, and discover new ways of relating to ourselves and the people we care about. I value authenticity, humour when it feels right, and creating a space where you don’t have to perform. Life can be complicated. I strive to make our sessions a place where you can explore your authentic self, gain clarity, and find the answers that feel meaningful to you.

Culture, Systems, Society

While the challenges that bring us to therapy often feel deeply personal, the factors contributing to them are often much broader. As a visible minority growing up in a Western country, I understand that there are many societal and cultural nuances to navigate in every situation, some of which can be quite distressing, especially when they are at odds. Together, we can explore the systems you’re part of and unpack how they may be shaping your experiences.

Counselling for Shame and Self-Worth

Shame can take hold in a single moment yet linger for years. I see it as something that is detrimental to quality of life, and something that no one should have to be burdened with forever. Together, we’ll build on your existing strengths while working toward a life that feels lighter and less burdened by shame.

Grief Counselling

Healing is never linear, and therapy is a great place to process it with all its ups, downs, and in betweens. It can feel isolating and confusing, especially when we’re surrounded by expectations about how we “should” grieve or how long healing should take. Therapy offers space to step away from those pressures and focus on your own process, however it unfolds. You don’t have to spend this difficult aspect of the human experience alone.

Interpersonal Challenges

Relationships and community are fundamental to our well-being, and interpersonal challenges are part of the package. We could work together on any aspect of interpersonal challenges; relationships, friendships, families, and more. Every relationship brings its own joys, challenges, and patterns of communication. We could collaborate on finding the balance that works best for you in maintaining the relationships in your life.

Resentment

Resentment is so often misunderstood and harshly judged, especially when it begins to affect your quality of life and the relationships you care about. Often, it’s the quiet accumulation of hurt—the things that were or weren’t said, the needs that were never met, or the moments you didn’t feel seen. Together, we can explore where those feelings stem from, what they may be protecting, and how to grow from your experiences without minimizing what you’ve been through.

Outside of Counselling

I have a background in the arts, which I am rediscovering a love for outside of counselling. Before pursuing counselling, I spent several years working in film and animation. Storytelling was at the heart of my work, and while I loved bringing characters to life, I found myself becoming increasingly interested in the real stories of the people around me. Through my own lived experiences, I realized that the conversations I found most meaningful were the ones where people felt seen, understood, and accepted. Counselling became a natural extension of that.

Besides arts, I enjoy experiencing new things. I am curious about all things unexplored, and love hearing stories from different times and cultures. I own one too many cats, who I love dearly (their fur…less so). I also love spending time just staring at the ocean, fire, or (unfortunately) my phone. I look forward to connecting!

It depends on what you want. Most clients fall into one of three categories:

  1. One (or two) and done – I just want some advice to move forward on a problem. Cool, just let me know that so I can make sure the session will be focused.
  2. Acute issue – I need some support to resolve an issue, but I don’t want to be in counselling forever. This usually takes 8-12 sessions but could be shorter or longer based on your needs (time, financial, issue complexity). We create the ideal structure together.
  3. Long-term therapeutic relationship – I need a safe space to process life events. Sessions are often booked up to a year in advance so you can count on the structure and support. The topic often changes session to session, but relates back to an overarching theme of self-development, relationship management, or something of that nature.

I can’t tell you which issues fall into which bucket, or guarantee results, because each client is unique. It’s best to let me know which category you think you might fall into, we can check and adjust as needed.

What is your favourite thing about working closely with people every day?

There is so much to learn from every person. Everyone has such a rich, diverse life story, how do you not become completely fascinated by what makes them who they are? I always feel so grateful for all the unique experiences people bring to the table, especially if they are willing to share their stories with me.

What is a personal challenge that you have overcome in your own life?

I feel the greatest challenge has been the conflicts between my family upbringing and the environment I grew up in. Being a young immigrant, there were a lot of cultural and societal difficulties to navigate, that often created a very stressful environment growing up. Some of the beliefs I developed during that time still resurface today, and learning to recognize and challenge them continues to be part of my own growth.
Every challenge that I’ve faced has opened up my world more and made me more open-minded and understanding to others’ experiences, so it is something that I am grateful for and would not change for anything. I am excited to face my next challenge (I hope it goes easy on me though haha).
