Luke Primus

MC, RCC# 20987

Luke Primus is accepting new clients.

Luke’s journey into the field of counselling began roughly ten years ago while struggling to identify a path forward in his career, wandering from carpentry to craft beer sales and everything in between. That struggle was the start of a challenging and meaningful pursuit to understand himself and the social world around him. Undergraduate studies in psychology led to graduate training in counselling which has evolved into a meaningful career helping others navigate their lives with clarity and compassion.

Raised in Prince George, Luke spent much of his childhood and early working years there, later completing his clinical practicum in the same community. He’s been living, working, studying, and enjoying life in Vancouver for the last ten years. Luke has a Master of Counselling (MC) from City University and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).

Seeking Direction, Living Authentically

Sometimes we know we need change but we don’t know where to start. Luke’s work with clients often starts by helping them identify what really matters to them, or what they value. Once values have been identified, Luke helps clients think strategically and creatively about what it will take to live by those values authentically – day by day, week to week. Implementation is often the hardest part of change, but good counselling helps clients stay focused, encouraged, and on track when faced with challenges.

Counselling for ADHD

Part of where Luke finds passion and purpose for counselling is in his own lived experience navigating life as a student and worker with ADHD. He understands neurodiversity from a theoretical and a personal lens, and he helps neurodiverse clients appreciate their strengths as well as the unique challenges they face. Luke also works with clients to create structure and routine for their lives that align with their values and priorities.

Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma

Luke has learned to respect the wisdom and internal strength of each client. He is deeply inspired by the belief that we all have the potential to become our most authentic selves but that we can’t do it alone – we need relationships that are nurturing and secure.

When our social environments fail us repeatedly or egregiously, we’re sometimes left with trauma that sticks around and gets in the way of living authentically. Often this translates into a form of depression, anxiety, or other forms of emotional dysregulation.

Luke is skilled and experienced at helping clients feel safe enough to address the effects of trauma from loneliness, neglect, abuse, and marginalization; he will help you think creatively about the future you want for yourself and the steps you can take towards that future.

Relationship Counselling / Couples Counselling

Luke has received additional training through Gottman Relationship Institute to bolster his work with partnered clients. Whether dating or married, relationship counselling is an excellent opportunity to establish a strong foundation for romantic involvement, and Luke considers it a privilege to support couples on their journey.

Luke offers accessible counselling – $95/50 minutes, for any clients, during slow times.

It depends on what you want. Most clients fall into one of three categories:

  1. One (or two) and done – I just want some advice to move forward on a problem. Cool, just let me know that so I can make sure the session will be focused.
  2. Acute issue – I need some support to resolve an issue, but I don’t want to be in counselling forever. This usually takes 8-12 sessions but could be shorter or longer based on your needs (time, financial, issue complexity). We create the ideal structure together.
  3. Long-term therapeutic relationship – I need a safe space to process life events. Sessions are often booked up to a year in advance so you can count on the structure and support. The topic often changes session to session, but relates back to an overarching theme of self-development, relationship management, or something of that nature.

I can’t tell you which issues fall into which bucket, or guarantee results, because each client is unique. It’s best to let me know which category you think you might fall into, we can check and adjust as needed.

What experience or background do you bring to your counselling and supervision practice that is uniquely yours?

While studying psychology has been a primary focus in the last few years, I’ve spent the last two decades (this makes me feel old) working in various roles from tree-planter in the northern wilderness to service advisor in a small Vancouver office. I look back on all the jobs I’ve had and all the hats I’ve worn (metaphorically) with appreciation for the perspective I now carry with me as a counsellor.

What is your favourite thing about working closely with people every day?

The more time I spend getting to know people, and the more people I get to know throughout my career, the bigger my world gets and the richer my perspective on this wild ride we call life. I’ve never been good at small talk, so I love showing up to work each day knowing I’ll get to have some real and honest conversations about life with people I care about.

What is a personal challenge that you have overcome in your own life?

I struggled with really bad anxiety in my early twenties. I spent years researching and trying out changes to my lifestyle in hopes of feeling better and thinking more clearly. Some things worked, some things not so much…but along the way I grew to understand myself and my experience of the world with new depth and clarity. I have learned to experience anxiety in a way that is helpful but not overwhelming, and I love helping others relate to their feelings in the same way.

What have you learned from your work?

So far, I’ve learned never to assume that I understand what a person is going through. Every person I meet is unique and their experience of the world is not the same as mine, which is one of the reasons I find this work so interesting and fulfilling!
